Inflation quietly reduces what your money can buy, even while the number in your account stays exactly the same. This calculator shows how much purchasing power a given amount could lose over time at a chosen inflation rate — the silent erosion that makes idle cash a riskier choice than it first appears.
The Variables This Calculator Measures
- Amount Today — the sum you’re evaluating, in today’s naira.
- Inflation Rate — the assumed annual rate of price increases over the period.
- Number of Years — how long the amount is projected forward.
- Future Purchasing Power — what your amount will be able to buy at the end of the period, expressed in today’s terms.
- Value Lost — the gap between today’s purchasing power and the future purchasing power of the same nominal sum.
Importantly, this does not mean your money disappears — a fixed sum kept in cash is still the same number of naira in ten years. What changes is how much that sum can actually purchase. For current official inflation data, see our Nigeria Inflation Rate Tracker, updated monthly from National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data.

Calculation Methodology
This calculator discounts a present sum by a constant assumed inflation rate to estimate its future purchasing power in today’s terms:
Value Lost = Amount Today − Future Purchasing Power
This is not a projection of your account balance shrinking — the nominal amount of naira you hold does not change. It is a measure of what that unchanged nominal amount will actually be able to purchase after prices have risen for the stated number of years.
Nominal Return vs. Real Return
An investment’s real return is its nominal return minus the inflation rate. A 10% return during 18% inflation is a negative real return — you are losing purchasing power even though your balance is growing. Only returns that exceed inflation increase what your money can actually buy.
