Most savings advice tells you how much to save, but not how long it will actually take to reach a specific target. This calculator solves that directly: given a goal amount, what you’ve already saved, your monthly contribution, and an expected interest rate, it works out the time required to get there.
The Variables This Calculator Measures
- Target Savings — the amount you want to accumulate.
- Current Savings — the lump sum you’ve already set aside toward the goal.
- Monthly Contribution — how much you plan to add each month.
- Annual Interest Rate — the assumed yearly return on your savings, compounded monthly.
- Time to Goal — the calculated result: how many years and months until your balance reaches the target.
A higher interest rate or a larger monthly contribution both shorten the timeline — but contribution size is the variable you control most directly. To see how a specific rate compounds over a fixed number of years instead of a fixed target, use our Compound Interest Calculator.

Set your target, current balance, and monthly contribution to see how long it will take to reach your goal.
Calculation Methodology
This tool simulates your savings balance month by month — adding your contribution, then applying interest — and stops as soon as the balance reaches your target:
Each month: Balance = (Balance + Monthly Contribution) × (1 + Monthly Rate)
Time to Goal = the first month at which Balance ≥ Target Savings
If your current savings already meets or exceeds your target, the result shows the goal as already reached. If your contribution and rate combination would take longer than 50 years to reach the target, the calculator reports this instead of an unbounded timeline.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming a fixed rate is guaranteed. Interest rates on savings and investment accounts vary and are rarely fixed over multi-year periods — treat the result as an estimate, not a promise.
- Underestimating the value of increasing contributions. A modest increase in monthly contribution often shortens the timeline more than a modest increase in interest rate.
- Ignoring inflation. A naira target set today buys less in the future — factor in rising costs when setting a long-term goal.
- Treating “current savings” loosely. Only include savings actually earmarked for this specific goal, not your total balance across all purposes.
